Eastern White Pine, A Guide to Winter Finches, Review of White Pine, by John Pastor, News and Notes, including the Northern Naturalist Winter Nature Workshop
I've enjoyed reading the past two issues very much! It's inspired me to get outside more throughout this winter. Will there be any more upcoming Zoom gatherings? I missed the one on January 8 (I got behind on my reading. Shame on me!)
I love how many different finches there are. They are so beautiful! Some of the ones in your post I hadn’t heard about before, so I learned something new. Thank you!
I’ve added White Pine to my reading list and also want to check out his earlier book—thanks for those recommendations! Excited to hear about how your Big Year goes and I think it’s very cool that you’re doing it all in your home county.
Thanks for the review and recommendation on John Pastor's book. I will definitely be picking it up! I would be curious to know if the white pine market is as weak in Minnesota as it is in the U.P. I need to do a select thinning of our white pine in conjunction with our Forest Management Plan, but have struggled to find a buyer. We have worked with the American Bird Conservancy to develop habitat for golden-winged warblers. In that process, it was very interesting to learn what other species our forest supports including many of those you discussed. Thanks so much! BTW, we just picked up your dragonfly guide on Amazon and look forward to using it this coming year.
